An Easy Pre-Workout Meal

You are about to head out for a workout, of course bringing your trusty workout companion Digifit along with you, and you do not have time to sit down for a nice meal. You have thrown down so many workout gels in the last few days that you cannot look at your tooth paste without feeling a gag reflex. You need a quick and easy meal, and most importantly one that will fuel your workout.

I have just the thing for you. Ladies and gentleman, introducing the Almond Butter, Blueberry Preserves, and Banana Sandwich. This sandwich is super easy to make. Lets break it down ingredient by ingredient.

1. Whole Wheat Bread
Whole wheat bread is a complex carbohydrate, which according to Askmen.com means that it is “slow-burning” and will “take longer to convert to glucose, which will keep your blood sugar level consistent and prevent you from having an energy crash in the middle of your workout”. Carbohydrates are the most essential aspect of a pre-workout meal, and whole-wheat bread is a good start.

2. Almond Butter
Almond butter is a much better alternative to the more traditional peanut butter, as almonds are a great source of omega-3 Fatty Acids (For more information on the benefits of Omega-3’s, read our blog post on Fish Oil) and have less saturated fat than peanuts. Almond butter is also much lower in fat and cholesterol, and has a distinct taste that personally, I prefer.

3. Blueberry Preserves
Most people just go with run of the mill strawberry or grape jam, but if you are one of these people you are leaving antioxidants on the table. Blueberries are stuffed full of these cancer fighting friends, with antioxidants also being a great provider of energy. Be sure to check the label and make sure your product does not have high-fructose corn syrup, which is not a healthy choice. Go to your local Trader Joe’s or similar type store and look for their Reduced Sugar Organic Blueberry Preserves.

4. Banana
Bananas feature a “very digestible form of carbohydrates” and “bananas are packed with potassium, which aids in maintaining proper nerve and muscle function” (Askmen.com). Slice up the banana and put it right into the middle of your sandwich.

Chomp down on this delicious sandwich, and you are ready for a great workout!
