Digifit wins Consumer Application Award at CTIA

Las Vegas, US ( PRWEB ) March 24, 2010 — ANT Wireless (“ANT”), a division of Dynastream Innovations Inc. and ANT+ member iTMP Technology (maker of Digifit) today announce that Digifit has won the ‘Consumer Application’ Award in the Andrew Seybold MobileApp Challenge.  iTMP demonstrated  the patent pending Digifit™ Ecosystem, a simple and completely automatic way to track fitness and health on the iPhone® and iPod touch®, Monday in the MobileApp Challenge at CTIA Wireless 2010, in Las Vegas.  Demonstrations of these first and only fitness and integrated heart monitoring apps on the iPhone (that work with ANT+ compatible sensors), will continue throughout CTIA at the ANT+ booth (#6914).  ANT+ and Digifit are also coffee sponsors at mobihealthnews’ Everywhere Healthcare this week.

“With the Digifit Ecosystem and ANT+ we are connecting the dots between health and fitness,” declared Michael Williams, Founder and CEO of iTMP.  “Now with a single internet-enabled device, you can track your cardio workouts, indoors or out, and marry that fitness data with health data in one central repository. And because we have it ‘all together now’ SM on the iPhone, with one simple tap you can send the data to our upload partners’ websites.”

During the Wireless University session, a presentation by Seybold Partner Barney Dewey focused in on the huge wireless healthcare market opportunity that is still in its infancy. In describing the broad range of wireless healthcare solutions, Dewey referenced West Wireless Health Institute’s market breakdown: Disease management, Preempting disease, Aging in place and Underserved populations.

Dewey also referred to President Obama’s statement that in the absence of a radical shift towards prevention and public health, we will not be successful in containing medical costs or improving the health of the American people.  He added that wireless healthcare solutions offer a radical shift for the future of healthcare delivery, starting with disease prevention.

Andrew Seybold, the man behind the respected event, added:  “Williams’ personal story resonated well with our audience at Wireless University as did The Digifit Ecosystem – the top consumer app in our Mobile App challenge this year.  As wireless health solutions are adopted by consumers, Digifit has the potential to be a big success story.”  (See “The personal story behind Digifit” below.)

The enabling interface is iTMP’s Digifit™ Connect, an accessory that allows the iPhone and iPod touch to receive data from ANT+ health and fitness sensors. The Digifit accessory for iPhone is currently available for sale at www.digifit.com. Also, visit www.digifit.com to view a short video titled Additional Hardware Required.)  Digifit uses Nordic Semiconductor’s 8-channel nRF24AP2 ANT chip.

“Digifit has launched a whole new era of health apps that will positively impact society,” stated Brian Macdonald, Director, ANT Wireless. “These practical, preventative solutions will be pivotal in helping to reduce costs in healthcare.  With Digifit, millions of iPhone and iPod touch users worldwide have a plug-and-play alternative that allows them to conveniently track their fitness and health.  And ANT+ interoperable sensors help to make it all a seamless, end-to-end solution.”

Over 235 leading brands, manufacturers and developers now participate in the established ANT+ interoperable ecosystem and contribute many million products to the market.  Recognized as the leading digital standard in ultra low power wireless communication, ANT+ ensures efficient, seamless and practical functionality while requiring very little battery life.

ANT is available on Nordic Semiconductor products (the AP1 and AP2 family).  A family of network node products will be available from Texas Instruments starting Q3 2010.  All ANT parts support ANT+.  Native ANT support is now available on mobile platforms with Texas Instruments’ WiLink™ multi protocol chip.

The Wireless University is held twice-yearly in conjunction with the CTIA trade shows. It focuses on issues facing wireless mobility by examining its key elements – applications, content, devices, and technologies.

The personal story behind Digifit
The Digifit Ecosystem is the brain child of Michael Williams, Founder and CEO of the company behind the Digifit – iTMP (see “About iTMP” below) – who was inspired to start the company to develop the product after successfully losing 50 pounds and getting healthy through fitness.

As Williams explains himself: “Three years ago on a major U.S. network news channel, I saw a five part series on obesity. On Monday they linked obesity to high blood pressure, high cholesterol on Tuesday, acid reflux on Wednesday, and asthma on Thursday.

“I was 42 years old and on meds [medications] for all of the above but it wasn’t until Friday that I decided it was time to do something about it. On Friday, they reported that obesity was “socially contagious” and that there wasn’t much you could do about it and it was OK. I was infuriated by such nonsense and over the weekend came up with a plan to lose 50 pounds through healthy eating and exercise in seven months.

“I had a physical examination and told my doctor that I was going to get back to my ”college weight” and get off all of the meds. He told me that it was likely that my conditions were genetic and as such I’d probably be on the meds for the rest of my life so I shouldn’t get discouraged. I told him I’d be back in seven months.

“Seven months later, to the day, I came back 50 pounds lighter. He took me off all of those medications and consequently I have been saving, together with my healthcare provider, U.S. $25,000 annually ever since.

“The hardest part of that whole journey was tracking my data. Everyday when I woke up, I took my resting pulse and blood pressure, weighed myself and tracked my caloric burn during exercise. I recorded this data manually in Excel spreadsheets and charted out my plan and the results.

“After the first month I could see that as my weight declined, my blood pressure was perfectly correlated to my weight and there was no stopping me! I had total control over the two things that determined what happened with my weight – food intake and caloric burn during exercise – and therefore I could control my blood pressure. I simply had to eat healthy foods in reasonable portions and then I had to find what seven day average caloric burn during exercise would allow me to maintain a healthy weight through fitness.

“When the iPhone came out I decided to quit my day job and dedicate the next few years of my life to making the hardest part of my journey the easy part for others. I knew that if I could “automagically” track all of that data for people on mobiles, then not only could people have a dashboard for healthy living, but they could also share that information with their healthcare providers, communities and personal trainers.

“We need a fundamental paradigm shift away from ‘testing to health‘ – where you go to a physician and pop pills to make your health metrics appear ‘normal’ even if you are still overweight – towards ‘living to health’ – where you track the right fitness and health metrics and maintain your ‘healthy’ weight. Our mission is to make that vision a reality for a great many people.”
